1. GirlFuture
Location: virtual
Type: Feminist Writers
Deadline: May 31st, 2010
Description: GirlFuture is a nonprofit website that counterbalances the celebrity-saturated, image-based culture aimed at girls by providing a safe place online where girls ages 9-15 can learn, ask questions, and meet other girls dealing with similar challenges of being an adolescent female. We want to give girls the tools to be self-confident, independent, and successful that are currently missing from pre-teen and teen media.
GirlFuture will launch nationally in March and is seeking writers to produce original content for the site. We’re looking for bloggers who are committed to our mission and are knowledgeable about the lives and struggles of young girls--from Twilight to cyberbullying to wearing your first bra to not seeing yourself represented in teen magazines. Writers will identify, research, and write about topics and trends in a conversational style that is short (250-500 words) and engages readers. Articles should answer questions girls have (or perhaps questions girls didn't even know that they had) and an additional emphasis should be placed on developing the critical thinking skills.
We need writers to cover an array of topics (e.g., self-image, puberty, healthy relationships, feminism, fitness, leadership, community involvement and organizing, cliques and popularity, financial independence, media literacy, and internet safety ) and creativity is encouraged.
This is a paid position, and compensation is determined per article.

2. Ms. Magazine Feminist Writers
Location: Beverly Hills, CA
Type: Open Call for Bloggers!
Deadline: May 5th, 2010
Description: Exciting news! We’re launching an official Ms. blog in March, and we’re looking for a team of bloggers. The blog will be a source of expert commentary on feminist news & culture, as well as breaking stories of feminist interest not yet covered in the mainstream media or the feminist blogosphere. The Ms. blog will allow us to communicate with our readership between issues, create an online space for feminist community, and spur activism.
We’re looking for bloggers who have a niche (or niches) that they are knowledgeable about and within which they can supply “added value”—either breaking stories or fresh perspectives on the news. We’re setting our sights on terrific writers who have engaging, lively voices.
In terms of tone, the Ms. philosophy is to be provocative and to take your fight to the Right! We love humor and attitude, but with a purpose—we don’t want to be snarky for no reason. Our blogs won’t be too long—250 to 500 words generally—so they’ve got to come quickly to the point. (If you have a longer piece, we may be able to put that in the articles section of the Ms. website, or even consider it for the magazine if it would still be timely.)
Unfortunately, we can’t afford to pay bloggers at this point. We hope that the blog will provide a lot of exposure, however: Once we get rolling, we expect to generate a readership in the hundreds of thousands.
We\'re in need of bloggers on all feminist topics—the blog will cover the arts, media, health, law, national politics, global feminisms, “personal is political” moments, and more. We plan to encourage bloggers to focus distinct topics so there’s not too much overlap.
If you’re interested, please contact senior editor Michele Kort at mkort@msmagazine.com and send the following:
- Examples of two items you might have blogged about in the past week or two. What would your take have been, and what else could you have added to the conversation in terms of background or inside info? (Or, if you’re applying before March 1st, please send one or two ideas that would be appropriate for the first two weeks of March.)
- 2-3 Writing clips --no more than 1,000 words, blog or op-ed style writing preferred
- Your areas of expertise and why you’re an expert (this can be life experience as well as degrees!)
We look forward to hearing from you!
